Approachable risk management strategies

Risk Intelligent Organisations

Risk management refers to the practice of identifying potential risks in advance, analysing them and taking precautionary steps to reduce, curb or mitigate the risk.

A hazard is something that can cause harm, e.g. electricity, chemicals, dangerous surf conditions at a beach, working up a ladder, noise, a bully at work, stress, etc. A risk is the chance, high or low, that any hazard will actually cause somebody harm.

There’s a wide range of risks that an organisation might encounter, e.g., operational risk, financial risk, reputational risk, economic risk, compliance risk, security and fraud risk.

Our team can create your risk policy and an independent risk profile. The intent of a risk profile is to identify key risks, existing controls and their effectiveness. Working with you, we’ll recommend solutions providing you and your stakeholders with assurance that risk is being reduced to as low as reasonably practicable using international best practice. The process can be applied to a wide range of applications including organisations, operations, activities and events.

Clients use our services because of our individuality, value and knowhow of our team. Our in-house experts include Certified Practicing Risk Managers (CPRM), and our work is aligned with the various Australian, New Zealand and International Standards.

In-house Support An increasing number of our clients are acknowledging that they lack the requisite capability to fulfill their risk management requirements capably. Risk Intelligence  provides an in-house retained role, working hand-in-hand with the leadership team in instituting and maintaining an effective risk management framework and culture.

Events

Risk Intelligent Projects

The assurance that all health and safety risks are eliminated or minimised so far as is reasonably practicable is an integral part of project organisers’ risk management planning and their duty under the workplace health and safety legislation.

The success of your project is measured in many ways and safety is one of them. Projects vary in size, location, nature and type, but all projects  require assessment, control and monitoring of risks. When planning a project or an event it is imperative to ensure the safety of all those involved; not only the safety of participants but also that of all employees, contractors, volunteers and members of the general public.

Our specialists will work with you to identify the potential hazards and assess the associated risks. We will develop appropriate risk control measures to minimise the potential for injury or harm. Through the development of an Event Safety Management Plan we’ll document all of the event’s Health & Safety arrangements and procedures including the site build and bump in, the live event and bump out. We’ll help you develop Emergency Response Plans, contingency options and OHS site rules and induction programs.

During the event, our onsite Risk and Safety Officer will work with program organisers to deliver real-time advice, providing you with peace of mind that your risk levels are as low as reasonably possible as well as ensuring a rapid response to any unforeseen challenges that might arise.

As the site is built, we will be looking for independent evidence that the structure and its fittings and equipment is compliant and safe.  This might include reviews by independent structural engineers, current tagging of electrical equipment and inspections of firefighting and lifesaving equipment.

Multiple suppliers? No problem! We are able to help you review and verify contractor and supplier documents, e.g., Public Liability, Professional Indemnity, Workers Compensation; risk assessments, Safe Work Method Statements for any high-risk activities and Certificates, Registrations, Accreditations, etc, confirming that your suppliers are qualified to practice their trade. Our clients have access to our unique RiView online portal.

Emergency Management

Our Emergency Management Division is a standout! We’ll prepare your project or event for an emergency or disruption such as severe weather, environmental hazards and natural disasters, bushfires and floods, workplace accidents and hostile threats to public safety.

We will provide you, your teams and your stakeholders with the confidence that you’re across the risks that your project could face, and that in the event of any emergency, your response will be effective at ensuring that minimal disruptions are caused.  Working with you, we’ll develop vigorous and robust procedures to ensure an optimal response…then we will test them with your teams.

With significant real-life experience, our emergency management specialists recognise how emergency service organisations and functional government agencies operate.  Our plans and operations ensure they are developed and tested in collaboration with local emergency services.  Our work is consistent with local and state emergency management legislation and Australian Standards, including AS3745 Planning for emergencies in facilities.

We can also assist with the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to under pin and support your emergency management arrangements.  Examples include:

  • Debriefs and After Action Reviews
  • Crisis management plans
  • Emergency response plans
  • Emergency management plans
  • Pandemic and Public Health plans
  • Severe weather (e.g. electrical storms, high winds and heatwaves) and natural disaster plans (such as floods, bushfires and dangerous surf)
  • Emergency Control Centre Standard Operating Procedures
  • Evacuation Plans for event sites

We pick our safety team from specialists with extensive operational and leadership backgrounds in emergency services including experienced police, fire and rescue personnel, ambulance paramedics and helicopter rescue crews.  Our team can act as Chief Wardens and can lead multi-agency Event Control Centres.

Independent Reviews & Investigations

Do you need some independent advice? An assessment or analysis on a particular matter, particularly in the areas of risk, safety, emergency management, major incidents, rescue operations or aviation incidents? Have you experienced a critical incident or near miss?

The Risk Intelligence team includes subject matter experts and seasoned investigators who are highly skilled and experienced in the provision of reviews and examination of issues. Our depth of experience includes public, corporate and community events, sport and competitions, aviation and maritime, emergency services and operations and community, charitable and not-for-profit organisations.

Our Investigations Team will help you to better understand what happened (and why) following an incident. We will assist the formation of measures to reduce the likelihood of the same thing happening again or reduce the consequences if it does happen again.

Using various Root Cause Analysis models, the review process includes an examination into the circumstances surrounding the incident or event, the actions of those involved, the responses to the event and the outcomes. Instead of apportioning blame, we seek to identify opportunities for ongoing improvement.
